Wiley Rein hosted a luncheon roundtable discussion today featuring Brendan Carr, Commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and firm alumnus. The event was attended by over 120 guests, including many clients and leaders in the communications industry, as well as press.

Commissioner Carr offered his perspectives on key FCC priorities such as facilitating the nationwide buildout of next-generation (5G) networks. He also provided insight into the FCC’s effort to modernize regulations applicable to media entities including broadcasters, cable operators, and satellite television providers. In addition, Commissioner Carr discussed the Connected Care Pilot Program, the Commissioner’s initiative to expand access to telehealth technologies, particularly in rural and low-income areas. The Commission is scheduled to vote in August on the Commissioner’s proposal, which would designate $100 million in Universal Service Fund support to the pilot, at its August open meeting.

Commissioner Carr, nominated to the FCC by President Trump, was confirmed unanimously by the Senate on August 3, 2017, and was sworn into office on August 11, 2017. He has over a dozen years of public and private sector experience in technology and communications law and policy – serving most recently as the General Counsel of the FCC.
