Time to Gear Up for Auction 103 (Upper 37 GHz, 39 GHz, and 47 GHz bands)

The FCC dropped a Public Notice establishing application and bidding procedures for Auction 103—the next in a series of millimeter wave spectrum auctions by the Commission as part of its Spectrum Frontiers proceeding.  Auction 103, scheduled to begin December 10, 2019, features UMFUS licenses in the 37.6-38.6 GHz (Upper 37 GHz), 38.6-40 GHz (39 GHz), and 47.2-48.2 GHz (47 GHz) bands.

FTC Staff Provide Insights on Ongoing FTC Hearings

On Tuesday, December 4, 2018, the Federal Communications Bar Association hosted a brown bag lunch discussion of the FTC’s Hearings on Competition and Consumer Protection in the 21st Century. The discussion featured Maneesha Mithal, Associate Director of the FTC’s Division of Privacy and Identity Protection, and Derek Moore, Attorney Advisor in the FTC’s Office of Policy Planning. 

FCC Forum on Artificial Intelligence Busts Common Misperceptions

The Federal Communications Commission convened a Forum to examine artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, featuring subject matter experts from industry and academia.  AI, generally speaking, is the ability of computer systems to exhibit human-like behaviors including cognitive reasoning, speech recognition, and social and emotional behaviors.  We increasingly interact with AI technologies on a day-to-day basis through voice-controlled personal assistants, automated vehicles, mobile check deposits, and more.

CQ UAS: FCC Proposes $2.8 Million Fine, Sends Warning to Drone Equipment Manufacturers and Operators

In a reminder that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is not the only agency with authority over unmanned aircraft system (UAS) operations, yesterday the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced a proposed $2.8 million forfeiture against HobbyKing for marketing certain radio transmitters for use with drones that operate outside their authorized spectrum bands, and at power levels beyond what the FCC has permitted.
